Although records are incomplete for the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, we know that already by 1690 the cighty or so drawings by Holbein (including Nos. 21-26), and the unsurpassed group of studies by Leonardo da Vinci (including Nos. 4-13) had entered the Collection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn both cases the drawings were housed in large albums until some time in the last century. It was only natural therefore that they should be kept in the Royal Library alongside other manuscript and printed material.
