pigeon-house-and-beyond-a-guide-to-the-budawang-range-and-environs
Pigeon House And Beyond: A Guide To The Budawang Range And Environs

"I am indeed very pleased to have been asked to write the foreword for this comprehensive guide to the Budawang Ranges, as, just prior to the publication of the book I had the opportunity to announce the reservation of an addition of land to the southern end of Morton National park. The area forms part of the Budawang Ranges described in the book and totals an area of some 14,000 hectares.

The acquisition of this land is representative of the New South Wales Government's ongoing commitment to conserve outstanding natural areas throughout the State.

For those who have not experienced the Budawangs at first hand, the book provides an excellent and detailed study into the natural and cultural features that make this area so spectacular. The superb photographs in the book clearly illustrate its rugged beauty.

It may be said that this type of landscape can only be enjoyed by people with sturdy legs and stout hearts. Indeed, its recreation opportunities may, to some extent, be limited by the physical constraints of the terrain. Nonetheless the conservation values of the area benefit the whole community.

Our nation as a whole is justly proud of its unique wildlife and it is areas like the Budawang Ranges that contribute to the protection of these species. As an example of their importance, one of the authors has suggested that this area may contain one of the few remaining naturally occurring populations of the parma wallaby.

The rich diversity and profusion of wildlife within the dissected landforms of
the 'Budawangs' is described in detail in the book.

The conservation value of the area can be looked at from a localised viewpoint. The protection of the Upper Clyde catchment means that clean water is available for downstream communities. Unpolluted water ensures the future of such industries as oyster farming and fishing and in turn the tourist trade.

As the book suggests, the area is not without its problems. It indicates that some areas have suffered from overuse and misuse, to the detriment of the natural environment. The continuing co-operation between bushwalkers and the National Parks and Wildlife Service will ensure that an irreplaceable resource will be enjoyed for many years to come.

The magnificent scenery of the Budawang Ranges has undoubtedly been the inspiration for "Pigeon House and Beyond". I commend the Budawang Committee on this excellent publication and I am sure that it will provide inspiration for all who read it."

Eric Bedford
Minister for Planning & Environment
Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney, NSW, Australia
8th April, 1982.

https://roseyravelstonbooks.com.au/products/pigeon-house-and-beyond-a-guide-to-the-budawang-range-and-environs
