Bread and Roses tells of the camaraderie and youthful exuberance in the Militant Women's Group in the 1920s; life on the dole, the Unemployed Workers Movement, the Militant Minority, the political struggles against hunger, unemployment and eviction in the desperate 1930s. They recall the drama (and humour) of police raids on leftists in the early days of the wat, and was life was like in the illegal Communist Party.

Mary, Topsy and Flo fought for peace and socialism, their struggle carried on through cold war and political oppression with undiminished faith in the future. They are part of our history - women's history, labour history, Australian history.
