The world’s longest single-track line, the harshest environment and Australia’s largest infrastructure project – the wonderful photographs in this book are more than a record of how Australia delivered a project that had been discussed for over a century.

The book pays tribute to the hundreds of Australians from all walks of life who invest their time, skill, money or labour – and always their hope – in fulling the vision. The Adelaide–Darwin railway line is a railway line runs between the South Australian town of Tarcoola and the Northern Territory city of Darwin.

Preceded by a number of other shorter railways, a line through to Darwin was fully realised in 2004 when the final link from Alice Springs to Darwin was opened. 

This book tells the story in words and pictures of all the time, effort, skill, and money it took to get it done.
