At the age of nineteen, the author left home and walked to London, and then travelled on foot around Spain, where he was trapped by the outbreak of civil war (1936).

When Laurie Lee arrived in Spain he carried only a violin and no camera, and kept a record of his reminiscenses only in his mind's eye. This edition of his memoir includes reproductions of paintings and drawings of Spanish and English artists of the time.
