For the first time in one volume, we proudly present Australian Painters, a superb collection of the work of the leading Australian artists from 1788 to 1970. This book contains over two hundred and forty colour reproductions of paintings by more than one hundred artists.

The paintings range from the first known oil painting in Australia by convict Louis Watling, and those of the colonial painters, to Impressionist paintings including the well-known works of such artists as Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Charles Conder, to those of the Moderns representing a wide range of styles from post-Impressionism, abstraction and op-art to hard-edge minimal and colour-field painting. 

Designed for the student and the layman, this book provides a brief but authoritative survey of each period by the noted critic and author James Gleeson.
The wide range of paintings reproduced, together with enlarged details, will enable the
reader to compare and analyse the important features of these periods in Australian art.

The paintings have been specially selected by John Henshaw, the Sydney critic and lecturer who is General Editor of the Australian Art Library. They have been drawn from many collections, both public and private, in Australia and overseas, and there are lists of paintings in Public Collections which will serve as convenient guides to the student who wishes to study the original works.

This volume combines three popular titles that appeared in the "Australian Painting Studio Series" Colonial Painters 1788-1880, Impressionist Painters 1881-1930 and Modern Painters 1931-1970.
