Pokerwork, the art of decorating wooden surfaces with a heated point, is one of the oldest decorative skills in the world.
Introduced to Australia at the beginning of the twentieth century, part of the worldwide revival of creative arts led by the English Arts and Crafts Movement, pokerwork enjoyed several decades of popularity. The designs, heavily influenced by Art Nouveau, featured mainly local flora and fauna.
Helena Walsh shares with us over fifty items from her fascinating gallery of pokerwork pieces, some of which have come to her with very interesting histories. Nearly all are Australian in origin.
The book also tells you how to make your own pokerwork, and how to restore damaged pieces from years gone by.
