Below the Line

It is early into the next century, and the Australia we have come to take for granted has changed a great deal… A line, north of Brisbane in the east and extending to Carnarvon in the west, divides the continent.  To the south is Australia, to the north the Republic of South Irian.

The Indonesian invasion, preceded by a mass exodus of refugees, changes utterly our ideas about Australia. Life ‘below the line’ is very different for those who have stayed and seen their country become an Asian Australia.

And as Angela Steen and Oliver Maccii cross the Line, in search of the mysterious ‘chosen ones’. Eluding the patrols sent out by both sides, they come to realise that the country itself is indeed the third player in the drama – the ultimate chooser…
