Aspinall was a teenage Australian soldier based at barracks near Changi and a keen photographer when captured by the Japanese in February 1942 on the fall of Singapore.

He kept a secret record of the photos he took and processed when a prisoner at Changi and also on the Burma-Thailand railway camp.
