Communication and Cultural Literacy: An Introduction

Communication And Cultural Literacy introduces the key concepts and skills needed by students of communication studies, cultural studies and textual studies.

From Saussure to Bourdieu, the authors present a range of approaches to the study of communication and culture. However, readers will not find 'Theory' with a capital 'T' here. Rather, the authors show how the crippling division between theory and practice can be overcome using the concept of cultural literacy. Concepts are introduced in particular contexts of social meaning making and these examples are used to demonstrate the essential skills of textual analysis.

Examples are chosen from contemporary popular culture and everyday social and cultural practices in a range of written, oral and visual mediums including newspapers, magazines, television, film and ordinary speech.
