Castles were introduced into England by the Normans in the 11th century, and more than 1,500 were built throughout England and Wales during the following 400 years.

From the first wooden tower perched on a sturdy mound of earth, constructed in a few short weeks, the castle developed into the powerful and sophisticated structure of stone we recognise today and which took decades to complete.

A few castles are fortunate and have families living in them still, while others stand empty and alone, bravely bearing the scars of war and time. All are worth a visit and there are dozens to choose from. Each has its own story to tell, and there is much to be marvelled at.
