The 556 colour illustrations make this one of the most abundantly illustrated books on the Australian flora ever produced. The illustrations depict a representative collection of flowers and plants likely to be seen by the observant traveller or naturalist in areas of Southern Queensland and the whole of New South Wales and areas adjacent to these State boundaries.

Many of the plants depicted have not previously been illustrated, and while most are reasonably likely to be seen in their respective areas some quite rare or localised plants are also included.

Each of the illustrations is accompanied by a descriptive text, the botanical name, flowering time and where in general use, the plant's common name.

The illustrated part of the book is supported by a general text arranged in various ecological divisions which describe the habitats of the plants and their associations.
