Against a background of two cities - Sydney, thick with genteel sweat, and London, grim dark and depressed - For Love Alone tells the story of Teresa Hawkins, high-minded, passionate and independent, who knows only one commandment: Thou Shalt Love.

Obsessed by love and sex, she craves an idol, finding it in her teacher, the self-seeking and contemptuous Jonathon Crow.

Disregarding his indifference, Teresa is led by him into worlds other than the commonplace one to which she'd seemed fated to belong, and to James Quick, who saves Teresa from Crow and makes her aware of her power as a woman.
