Aboriginal issues are in the news today and will continue to be in the news. In the face of increased government expenditure, why do so many Aboriginal and international organisations continue to comment adversely on Aboriginal living conditions and lack of political rights?
This book provides both historical and present-day answers to these questions
The first two editions of Generations of Resistance have been used as a basic text for upper secondary and tertiary students for a decade, as well as being valued by the public at large. Aboriginal book distributors Blackbooks described this as 'one of the best available books on Aboriginal history and life" The third edition reiterates many features of the first two, and includes important developments in recent years, most notably the Mabo decision on Aboriginal native title to land. Additionally, statistics have been updated according to the 1991 census figures.
Lorna Lippmann has been in a position to follow closely these changes from the
vantage of a lifetime's involvement in Aboriginal issues: as activist, as academic, and
then as specialist in community education and community relations. She is also
well-known as a writer and commentator on Aboriginal affairs.
Topics dealt with include the history of black-white relations in Australia, including the latest research findings; the background to, and current position of, land rights, health and education; the renaissance of Aboriginality (including the growth of the arts); the implications of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody; as well as a new section devoted to the Mabo case.
The present volume gives an up-to-date and accurate picture of the contemporary Aboriginal scene which is of value to the general reader as well as to senior students.
