GEORGE LAMBERT 1873-1930, painter, draughtsman, illustrator and sculptor, was trained in Australia under Julian Ashton, gaining early recognition for his draughtsmanship.
He lived in England from 1902 to 1921, and in Australia from 1921 until his death in 1930. In his early paintings, such as Across the black soil plains, he expressed a nationalist sentiment through the depiction of pioneers. His principal work was in portraiture, in both pencil and oil, in which he demonstrated a sensitive appreciation of character and bravura style. He also painted large, highly stylised paintings of family and friends.
During the First World War he served in Palestine and Gallipoli as an official war artist, where he produced a series of landscapes expressing his delight in rhythmical shapes and colour harmonies.
In the 1920s he became interested in sculpture and completed several significant commissions. His work is represented in several British galleries and in most Australian public collections,
