Whilst researching his biography of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Roger Hicks, a photographer in his own right, was given full licence to explore not only the photographic archives of the Library of Tibet but also the Dalai Lama's personal photographic collection.

He was struck by the wealth of material available, and the result of his searches are to be found in this book.

It is with the continuity of the Tibetan spirit that this work is concerned. Many of these pictures have never before been published and show Tibet and Tibetan society in all their grandeur, variety, and adversity.
