It recounts numerous friendships including her love affair with Dashiell Hammett and the author and reveals her complexity, egotism, loyalty, courage and vulnerability. The author also wrote "A Place Without Twilight", "The Daughters of Necessity", "Strangers and Graves" and "Charlie Boy and the Columbus Tree". Together with Lillian Hellman he wrote "Eating Together".
