This book is the program from the NEW WORLDS FROM OLD: 19TH CENTURY AUSTRALIAN & AMERICAN LANDSCAPES exhibit sponsored by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut.

It showed in Canberra and Melbourne from March 1998 thru August 1998; and in Hartford, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. from September 1998 thru April 1999. Australia and the United States were the last two great land masses to be explored and settled. Our collective ancestors – British, European, Native American, African-American, Aboriginal, and Asian – shared the struggles and rewards of the advanced frontiers on scales not seen before, nor since.

This encounter between man and nature inspired artists of exceptional ability in both nations. From Thomas Cole to Winslow Homer in America and from John Glover to Tom Roberts in Australia. NEW WORLDS FROM OLD is the first time these two landscape traditions have been seen side-by-side.
