Syme’s approach in this book has been to review the published histories and examine activities, people and events in greater detail.  These segments cover contact with the indigenous inhabitants; whaling; the town in the 1840s and 1850s; the commercial dealings of James Atkinson, William Rutledge and their associates; and the shipping business.  In the twentieth century the story has a wider horizon.
