Selected Poems of Luis Cernuda (English and Spanish Edition)

Of all his contemporaries, Luis Cernuda (1902-1963) was the most European of Spain's poets.

His broad acquaintance with French, English and American, and German literature gave him access to poetic resources that had been unknown in Spanish letters, and also enabled him to turn a comparatist's critical eye on the literary history and poetic production of his own country. In spite of this cosmopolitanism, Cernuda's poetry is little known outside of Spain.

In a comprehensive effort to remedy this deficiency, Reginald Gibbons has drawn the most appealing poems from all of Cernuda's volumes to sketch the poet's career in its en-tirety. His English versions, as polished poems in themselves, reflect both the technical experiments and the Romantic idiom of Cernuda's originals.

An introduction places the poet and his work in its proper setting, and explanatory notes accompany the poems.
