The marvellous drawings of the colonial artist S.T. Gill (1818-1880), accompanied by extracts from contemporary writings, bring to life the days when 'gold fever' gripped the colony of Victoria.

Gill joined the gold rush in 1852, and his drawings of the characters he encountered became widely popular for his ability to capture figures in characteristic actions and attitudes. Gill depicted the hardships and successes of miners at Castlemaine, Mount Alexander, Daylesford, Fryers Creek, and Bendigo.
