The Muslims in Australia: a brief history

Bilal, who has been Secretary of the national Islamic body, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils and twice Secretary of the Islamic Council of Victoria, the umbrella bodv of Victorian Islamic Societies, attempts to show in this book how the history of our local Muslim community has been part of the history of Australia from the very earliest times.

Muslims featured in the first British dreams of a southern Singapore trading from Marege into Sulawesi, in the opening up of the inland of the continent to grazing and mining, and in the evolution of a multireligious, multicultural society, temporarily impeded by the 1901 race laws.

Islam is now an integral part of Australian society and Muslims are at last able to enjoy equality and freely participate in national life.

This history is just beginning.
