This book places the history of the Press in New South Wales in its social and political context, and relates it to overseas developments, particularly in Britain which had a strong influence on it. It describes the life of newspaper proprietors, printers, and journalists, and as far as possible examines the business as well as the literary side of the press.

Finally, the book attempts to show some of the effects of newspapers as one of the most important media of communication up to 1920.
