The Voices Beyond

Old Gerlof Davidsson is woken in the middle of the night by someone hammering on his door. A terrified boy staggers in and tells him a horrifying tale of a ship full of dying seamen, and a crazy man wielding an axe.

It’s the beginning of an oppressively hot summer season on Öland, as tens of thousands of tourists arrive to celebrate midsummer. But one of the visitors has been here before, and he’s returned to settle an ancient debt.

Gerlof realises that he met this man once, long ago, on a day he’s tried hard to forget. A day when he stood in a churchyard and heard the sound of knocking from a freshly dug grave . . .
