This is the first book on the waratah. The author relates the early history and Aboriginal legends of the waratah then goes into the botany of the genus Telopea, describing the three species: T. speciosissima (NSW), T. oreades (Victoria), T. truncata (Tasmania) and the various hybrids of these.
There is a major chapter on cultivation and propagation which will be of great interest to both the home gardener and the commercial flower grower, covering topics such as drainage, watering, fertiliser, pests and pruning.
There are 64 colour plates and many black and white photographs and line
drawings.
Paul Nixon is Senior Technical Officer at the field station of the Sydney University Department of Agronomy and Horticultural Science at Camden. Paul has become a leading authority on the cultivation of waratah, and the substantial progress that has been made in developing waratah as a flower crop owes much to his initiative and hard work.
