Photographs by Rose and Emma Windmill

The Windmill Sisters' collection of about a thousand images depicting scenes and people in Victoria from 1913 to about 1940 is made particularly valuable by Emma Windmill's documentation of individual images.

These rare photographs, never published before, range from vignettes of family and social life in between-war Victoria to glimpses of places that have changed dramatically or can only be glimpsed among more modern environments.

Overall, this volume is a charming portrait of times gone by, an Australian ambience that no longer exists. Peter Elliston has carefully researched and selected 90 images. Working from original negatives or prints, he has restored the photographs to reproduction quality.

Based on interviews with descendants of the Windmill family and his own research, he has garnered family mementos and anecdotes about the Windmill photographers and outlines their history, providing fascinating insight into the lives and attitudes of this period and the photographic techniques used, which has produced a publication rich with imagery and historical detail about life in Victoria in the first half of the twentieth century.
