Treasures of the State Library of New South Wales
Treasures of the State Library of New South Wales
The Australiana Collections of the State Library of NSW contain some of the most priceless pieces of Australia’s cultural heritage.
The Collections grew from the vision of its two major donars, David scott Mitchell and Sir William Dixson, after whom the Mitchell and Dixson Libraries and the Dixson Galleries were named. These two wealthy and public-spirited men devoted their lives to seeking out the raw material of Australia’s history.
The collections contain the manuscrripts, pictures, books, maps, relics and other material that document our birth as a nation. Treasures of the State Library of NSWprovides a tantalising glimpse into the Library’s treasures, showing the enormous range of material held – its depth, strength and richness as a great documentary resource.
Most importantly it brings the Australiana Collections alive, revealing the human face of original historical material and of the men and women who shaped our past.
