Masterpieces from the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo

Ever since its opening in 1952 (Showa 27), through exhibitions and collecting works, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo has continued to study and widely introduce modern art created in Japan and abroad. The collection, which has been built continuously over the years, has come to almost 2,000 paintings. Adding the prints, sculptures, and photographs, the total has grown to over 9,000 works and it still continues to expand.

This book includes 202 representative works from our collection of paintings as of December 2004. As the number of pages is limited, unfortunately, there are many works that could not be included. However, we are confident that it will provide a view of the history of modern Japanese art. It is thanks to the donors and the support and cooperation of many others that the collection continues to grow. We will keep doing our best to gain a broad understanding from the society and further fulfill the Museum's activities.

東京国立近代美術館は昭和27年の創設以来、展覧会や作品収集活動を通じて、 日本と諸外国の近代美術を調査研究し、広く紹介する活動を続けてきました。 その間継続的に築かれてきたコレクションは今、絵画だけで2000点に近づ き、版画、彫刻、写真などもあわせれば9000点を越えるものに成長し、なお も拡大し続けています。

本書は平成16年12月現在当館が所蔵する絵画作品から、代表的作品202点 を掲載しています。ページ数の制約から載せることができなかった作品も 多々あることは残念ですが、本書によって、近代日本美術史についてのひと つの眺望を持っていただけるのではないかと思います。

コレクションの発展は、寄贈者の皆様をはじめ、さまざまな方からのご支 援、ご協力の賜物に他なりません。今後も広く社会からの理解を得つつ、よ り一層活動の充実に努めていきたいと思います。
