REFUGEE was originally conceived and exhibited at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles
The exhibit explores the lives of refugees from a host of diverse populations dispersed and displaced throughout the world. REFUGEE offers visitors insight into the plight of refugees, including their efforts to survive, their needs, their dreams, and their hopes for a better future.
Annenberg Space for Photography commissioned five internationally acclaimed artists—Lynsey Addario, Omar Victor Diop, Graciela Iturbide, Martin Schoeller, and Tom Stoddart—to create singular images that allow audiences to engage with the plight of refugees and to reflect on their distinct experiences of displacement.
An original documentary film of the same title is narrated by the United Nations Refugee Agency High Profile Supporter and Academy Award-winning actor Cate Blanchett. The short film follows Addario covering the disenfranchised Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar; Diop creating portraits of refugee mothers and children from the Central African Republic to neighboring Cameroon; Iturbide documenting displaced families in Colombia; Schoeller photographing newly resettled refugees in the United States; and Stoddart following the path of refugees fleeing to Europe.
REFUGEE was curated by Elisabeth Biondi and Patricia Lanza and debuted at the Annenberg Space for Photography in 2016.
