Tales from Ovid has its beginnings in the four passages from the Metamorphoses that Ted Hughes contributed to Michael Hofmann and James Lasdun's anthology, After Ovid.

Since that was published in 1994, Hughes has worked on twenty more stories from the same source, responding to what he has identified as Ovid's special gift of psychological
realism, all the more powerful in the context of the fantastic and outlandish happenings related by the Latin poet.

His response has been so whole-hearted that he achieves here what only the greatest translators have been able to do, providing not just an accurate account of the original, but one so thoroughly imbued with his own qualities that it is as if Latin and English poet were somehow the same person.
